Bruce Springsteen "Dancing In The Dark" Music Video Outtakes

A little birdie just clued me in on this near 13 minute video of... well, you can read the post title can't you. He looks kinda like he's auditioning for Stayin' Alive, or Flashdance, or something in the '80s. His dancing is nearly as bad as Britney Spears. Sorry, Bruce.

Cat Martino: "Yr Not Alone" Stream

Cat Martino is set to release her new album, Yr Not Alone, in the fall. With one release already behind her, The Sea Closet (August 2009), she has now moved on from it's piano and guitar based sound to what feeds the upcoming release, loops.

"One day I started to play with my guitarists’ pedal board through a microphone. Harmonizing is the most natural thing in the world for me, so… At first I thought I was combining opposites, but I soon heard the sounds complement each other. Besides, I love contradictions."

What I recall about this song when somehow, some way, something reminds me of it, is how the background vocals sound like a horn section. Or, like they're trying to recreate the warmest and softest horn section possible. That's how this song sounds: soft, warm, and floating.

Listen to Brooklyn-based musician, Cat Martino.

"London Calling" 2012

London, one of the world's great cities, was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games on July 6, 2005. And that was very likely the last time that this fact crossed my mind. Until I learned that London's Olympic committee is using the title song from The Clash's classic 1979 album London Calling as the London Games 'jingle' in advertising. Where it seems odd that they'd use a song with lyrics like:

"London calling to the faraway towns
Now war is declared, and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls"

and...

London calling to the zombies of death
Quit holding out, and draw another breath

and...

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

It, to me at least, seems equally odd that The Clash have allowed the song to be used. Although, since I can't find the commerical online to listen, I will wager a guess that these lines don't pop up in the advert.

Here's Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl and Steve Van Zandt paying their respects to The Clash's Joe Strummer who had passed away in late 2002 at the 2003 Grammys.

Photo Book of Beck: Out Nov. 9th

The book, comprised of photos of Beck taken by Autumn de Wilde, will cover 16 years of photographs. Published by Chronicle Books, it'll be out November 9th.

Daytrotter Session: The Black Swans

New session at Daytrotter: The Black Swans, led by Ohioan Jerry DeCicca, bring the dark, dark shadows out into the light and you can't help but look... and listen, as they burn and drift away.

I thought the name, The Black Swans, seemed vaguely familiar and then I saw Jerry's name, I wrote about these guys several years ago on *sixeyes. Just found it and here's what I wrote in 2005:

Jerry DeCicca, of The Black Swans, has a darkness in his voice, a ghostly quality. Not sinister, more like a blue fog, sad grey veils which are delivered in contrast to the sweet, and yes... also sad, violin of bandmate, Noel Sayre (a member of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia). The languid sounds of the band may stir memories of British band, Tindersticks, but they move in a decidedly more sinister and romantic arena then The Black Swans. DeCicca may also bring to mind Nick Cave, that is if Cave moved forward out of the bowels of his 'cave' towards the cloud streaked mid-western sky.

Their song, "Blue Skies", on their debut, Who Will Walk In The Darkness With You? (Delmore Records/Nov. 23 2004) is a lovely melody, pulled along by DeCicca's 'ghost-with-the-blues' voice and lifted above most bluesy rural-folk by Sayre's tasteful performance on violin. Throughout, "Blue Skies", a tinkling bell reminds the songs narrator, and us, that happiness still exists, that it's always there and will come back to those who survive through the blues.

"Futile Devices"
It's been a long, long time since I've memorized your face
It's been four hours now since I've wandered through your place
And when I sleep on your couch I feel very safe
And when you bring the blankets I cover up my face
I do love you
I do love you

And when you play guitar I listen to the strings buzz
The metal vibrates underneath your fingers
And when you crochet I feel mesmerized and proud
And I would say I love you, but saying it out loud is hard
So I won't say it at all
And I won't stay very long
But you are the life I needed all along
I think of you as my brother
Although that sounds dumb
Words are futile devices

Richard Swift: "Broken Finger Blues" MP3 + Stream

Richard Swift goes Motown on the song "Broken Finger Blues". The Motown sound, when it's beautiful and sad, is pure nostalgia. A bittersweet longing. Nothing better describes this song and what many Motown artists did so well.

Swift said this about the song:
A year and a half ago i broke my finger. Never got it back. This is a song I made a few days after getting the cast taken off.

Mystery Pills: They've Got the Hooks, You've Got the Cash

I heard from a musician early this morning via email, a fella who calls Rapid City, South Dakota home. He told me that I had written about his previous band around five years ago, probably closer to six. He had only signed his first name in the message and that name was Jason. Now, it didn't take me very long to figure out who he and his previous band were, but they would like to remain anonymous (and mysterious, I presume).

As a mysterious spokesperson for Mystery Pills said:

“If we come right out and tell people who's playing what, their brains immediately begin to mentally arrange people on a stage and put instruments in their hands. If we use the standard indie rock storyline and tell people about how we recorded in the attic of our grandmother's cabin on the beach, those are just more visual details that peoples' brains start to fill in that distract it from the sonic elements we're hoping they will focus on."

“No one really knows who we are or what to expect from a band from South Dakota anyway.”

His new project for the past year, or so, has been Mystery Pills. They've got two songs produced by the band and mixed by Stuart Sikes (Walkmen, White Stripes, Cat Power), and now, at the tail end of a campaign to raise money to press some 7 inch singles, they need a little help. The campaign for "Anti-Pattern" and its B-side "Vital Signs" wraps up August 5, 2011 at 3pm MDT.

GO HERE to learn more about Kickstarter and to help out the band.

Now we've got the cash part out of the way, now on to the hooks. A-Side "Vital Patterns" is punchy, catchy, and percolates until you're ready for the sugar and cream. Something is happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear... until I read this from the mysterious spokesperson again:

"Even though we're trying to make things sound electronic, we're generally using real instruments... We really only use samplers and synthesizers to approximate some instrument or machine that is too impractical to use or too expensive or hard to find."

Gem Club: 'Breakers' + 'Acid And Everything'

Boston's Gem Club make music which is minimal and atmospheric. But to me that phrase, 'minimal and atmospheric', is relative, for I feel that the more minimal something is the stronger the atmosphere which it creates. I should add the caveat that minimalism, minimalism which is striking, desires strength in it's parts. Those parts should have a distinct personality, and they should compliment each other... so to make a long idea short; minimalism is not easy to do well. Gem Club not only do it easily, they do do it well. So well in fact that they create not only the atmosphere, but the tiny planet on which the listener stands (if only for the length of a song); and that is no mean feat.

This is the title track off the full length, Breakers, out Sept. 27th on Hardly Art.

Bjork: "Crystalline" Video

The first sounds we heard from Bjork's upcoming album, Biophilia (September 27 on Nonesuch/One Little Indian), was the song Crystalline. So, it only stands to reason that the first video is also Crystalline. It may be directed by Michel Gondry, but it is unmistakably from the world of Bjork.

Sufjan Stevens: "Pleasure Principle" Stream + MP3

Sufjan stevens - pleasure principle (live at wnyc) by hipstereo

Here's the interview and performances at WNYC:

Here are the lyrics:

"Pleasure Principle"
I never meant to cause you pain
My burden is the weight of a feather
I never meant to lead you on
I only meant to please me, however

And then you tell me
Boy, we can do much more
Boy, we can do much more
Boy, we can do much more together
Boy, we can do much more together

I'm nothing but a selfish man
I'm nothing but a privileged peddlar
And did you think I'd stay the night
And did you think I'd love you forever

And then you tell me
Boy, we can do much more
Boy, we can do much more
Boy, we can do much more together
Boy, we can do much more together

I gotta tell you
Girl, I want nothing less
Girl, I want nothing less
Girl, I want nothing less than pleasure
Girl, I want nothing less than pleasure

And then you tell me
Boy, we made such a mess
Boy, we made such a mess
Boy, we made such a mess together
Boy, we made such a mess together
Boy, we made such a mess together
Boy, we made such a mess together

Bon Iver Covers Feist: "The Park" MP3

A couple of years ago, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon covered Canadian chanteuse Feist's "The Park" on Australia's Triple J radio. This goes rather nicely with his cover of Bjork currently making the rounds... and it sounds fantastic in comparison to the audio quality of the youtube rip. In fact this song suits Mr Vernon much better than the Bjork composition. Maybe he prefers the Canadian women, as I've heard his current squeeze is Ottawa girl, Kathleen Edwards (whose upcoming album he is co-producing with Portishead and Arcade Fire studio whiz Craig Silvey).

Bon Iver - The Park (Feist Cover) by hipstereo

"THE PARK"
Why would he come back through the park
You thought that you saw him, but no you did not
It's not him coming across the sea to surprise you
Not him who would know where in London to find you

Sadness so real that it populates
The city and leaves you homeless again
Steam from a cup and snow on the path
The seasons have changed from the present to past

The past...
There's hope to have
In the past...

Why would he come back through the park
You thought that you saw him, but no you did not
Who can be sure of anything through
The distance that keeps you from knowing truth

Why would he think, the boy could become
The man who could make you sure he was the one
The one...
My one...
My one...

The Monthly Spotlight: Allo Darlin' "Darren"

OK, this is the first monthly spotlight. The idea just came to me when I was listening to Allo Darlin' for the first time. A band will be highlighted, more or less monthly, in the sidebar by a streaming player and be blogged about in a 'The Monthly Spotlight' post.

This song inspired me and that's what good music does, it inspires the listeners, at least the listeners who enjoy what they're hearing, in a myriad of ways. Rapid-fire hand claps open the song, soon the oddly Nico-shaped and twee vocals rise up with a thumping bass and the magnetic crunchy guitar. "Darren" rushes along like mainlined sugar. Pop that gets you high for three and a half minutes, or so? Yes, please.

Allo Darlin's "Darren" can be streamed in the right sidebar.

JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN 'Chemmie'

Check out this new video of Joan as Policewoman’s new single "Chemmie". Taken from her latest album The Deep Field, the single is out August 1st. Joan’s says this about "Chemmie":

‘Chemmie’ describes “the undeniable chemistry that soars past logic” existing between lovers - a sultry, carnal lyric wrapped up in the form of ‘60s Philly soul.'

Sultry is what informs most of Joan Wasser's music, there is often a dark, sparkling mood churned up by her songwriting and performance.

This is a major step along with it's allowing Facebook users access to the site. Well, American users at the least... I'm in Canada, so I have no idea if the site is worth your time or not.

Damon Albarn Collective To Record in Congo

Damon Albarn will lead a collective in recording an album in a space of seven days. To be recorded in the Congo, the album, which is being recorded to benefit Oxfam’s work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, will see Albarn teaming up with a collective of producers... including Gorillaz collaborator Dan the Automator, XL label chief Richard Russell, and London DJ Darren Cunningham (aka Actress). Amongst the others contributing will be Jo Gunton, Marc Antoine, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Jneiro Jarel, and Kwes.

This is Albarn's second effort to aid Oxfam. A decade ago, in Mali, he whipped up Mali Music, in aid of the African nation.

Eleanor Friedberger: New Song + MP3

Eleanor Friedberger was in Toronto Tuesday night to perform songs from her great debut solo album, Last Summer. She made a stop late afternoon at Soundscapes on College St. in Toronto to play a couple of songs including this new song not found on the album. I'm not sure of the song's title, so I tried transcribing the lyrics and then took at stab at a possible title. BTW, after several listens to try to get the lyrics straight, I now love this song and wish it had been on the new record.

The song can be downloaded via the soundcloud player, it's the downward facing arrow on the right.

"Stare At The Sun"

"Stare At The Sun"
In the back of the taxi, you turned off the TV
and read me a book on your phone
here's the return of your skeleton key
oh, baby, the places we've gone
if that was goodbye then i must be high
you know i'll be seeing ya soon
if that was goodbye it'll snow in july
like it hailed in the middle of June

Give me your toothpaste
give me your ointment
give me your body in bed
keep this in amber
keep our appointment
remember the things that we said
if that was goodbye
then i must be high
you must be the sugar i need
if that was goodbye
then i am a fly
the future is guaranteed
because when i'm with you
everything's treasure
i forget what it's like to be gone
we're far from the town
in the suburbs of your pleasure
? in exile so long
try not to stare at the sun
try not to stare at the sun
try not to stare at the sun

cooperative coffee and synchronized showers
try not to look at the clock
goodbye to your castle
wave from the tower
then drop me a line from the dock
if that was goodbye
then you must be high
and maybe i'm losing the thread
if that was goodbye
the sea has run dry
so bitter with tears instead
whenever i'm with you everything's treasure
i forget what it's like to be gone
far from the town
in the suburbs of your pleasure
? in exile so long
try not to stare at the sun
try not to stare at the sun
try not to stare at the sun
